Prenatal Genetics

Prenatal genetics provides specialist support during a current pregnancy. It is for expectant parents who have had an unexpected result on a screening test, such as NIPT, a finding on an ultrasound, or a known family history that raises a question during pregnancy. At Clarity Genetics, this support includes time-sensitive counselling and coordination of any further testing, in collaboration with your obstetric or fetal medicine team.

Prenatal Genetics

A question about your baby’s health during pregnancy can be worrying, and decisions often need to be made within a narrow timeframe. Clarity Genetics offers prompt appointments so that you have clear, balanced information and time to consider your options. Appointments are available in person in Sydney and by telehealth across Australia. We can see most referrals within a few days.

When prenatal genetics support may help

Prenatal genetics is most relevant when something during a current pregnancy raises a question that benefits from specialist input. This is often a time-sensitive situation, and your referring doctor may arrange an urgent appointment.

Support may be appropriate in situations such as:

If you are planning a pregnancy rather than are currently pregnant, our Reproductive Genetics service is likely to be the better fit.

What to expect from your appointment

Your appointment focuses on understanding your situation, explaining what a result or finding may mean, and discussing the options available to you. The aim is to give you clear and balanced information so that you can make decisions that are right for you, without pressure.

Where further testing is being considered, your clinician will explain what each option involves, what it can and cannot tell you, and the practical timeframes. Because prenatal questions are often time-sensitive, appointments are arranged promptly, and your clinician will work closely with your obstetric or fetal medicine doctors throughout.

To make the most of a prenatal appointment, it helps to bring any recent test results, ultrasound reports and referral information with you, along with relevant family history. If you are unsure what would be useful to provide, the practice team can guide you when your appointment is booked.

Prenatal testing pathways

Several types of testing may be discussed during pregnancy, depending on your circumstances. Screening tests, such as NIPT and ultrasound, estimate the chance of a condition. Where a clearer answer is needed, diagnostic testing through amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling may be considered.

Clarity Genetics provides counselling and coordination across these pathways, including support before and after testing. Your clinician will discuss which options are relevant to your pregnancy, what each involves, and how the results would be interpreted, so that any decision is fully informed. Invasive prenatal testing is carried out in coordination with your fetal medicine team.

For referring clinicians

Clarity Genetics accepts referrals from obstetricians, maternal fetal medicine specialists, general practitioners and other clinicians involved in pregnancy care. We understand that prenatal referrals are time-sensitive, and prompt appointments can be arranged for current pregnancies.

Counselling, test ordering and pre- and post-test support are provided in coordination with your team, and a consultant report is provided following each consultation. For urgent referrals, we advise you to contact the practice team directly.

Appointments, Medicare and telehealth

Prenatal genetics consultations are available in person in Sydney and by telehealth across Australia. A valid referral is required to access Medicare rebates, and eligibility depends on the clinical circumstances.

Telehealth allows prompt access to specialist counselling wherever you are located, which can be particularly helpful when timeframes are short. Where an in-person appointment is clinically appropriate, this can be readily arranged (usually in the Sydney CBD).

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A referral from your GP, obstetrician or another specialist is required to access Medicare rebates for your consultation. If your situation is time-sensitive, your referring doctor can indicate this so a prompt appointment can be arranged.  Please note that GP referrals are valid for 12 months, whereas specialist referrals are valid for 3 months. If you have been referred by a specialist and your treatment extends beyond 3 months from your initial consultation, a new referral will be required.
