Clarity Genetics is a private genetics practice run by specialist clinical geneticist, Dr Ken Maclean. As a medical genetics specialist with a long-standing commitment to private practice, Ken’s focus is on making genetics accessible and understandable. As a clinician, he is driven by an eternal curiosity combined with a willingness and desire to help. He prides himself on his diligence, care and compassion in his approach, working closely with genetic counsellors at Clarity Genetics to ensure high quality patient-centred care.
Ken’s interest in genetics was piqued early in his career. As an undergraduate, he completed an honours degree in molecular and cellular biology and an overseas option term in genetic metabolic diseases, all while working as a registered nurse in a children’s hospital.
Ken trained initially in Paediatrics at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW), before undertaking his advanced training in Clinical Genetics at CHW and the Sydney Children’s Hospital. He obtained his Fellowship from the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 2003 (with dual recognition by AHPRA as a paediatrician and clinical geneticist). He has a Master degree in genomics and precision medicine (University of Sydney, 2022).
Ken’s vocational experience is extensive, spanning laboratory-based research, clinical paediatrics, and clinical genetics, through to medico-legal consultancy. Although based in central Sydney, he has extensive experience and a keen understanding of the healthcare needs rural and regional Australians. Central to this has been embracing telehealth and online care as core elements of his practice.
Ken’s clinical interests are diverse, ranging from reproductive and prenatal genetics, through to helping individuals and families understand whether they or their child may have a genetic cause for their condition, to helping adults undertake predictive testing for an inherited cancer or heart disease risk.
Ken is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (FRACP) and a member of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) and the Australasian Association of Clinical Geneticists.
Outside of work, Ken enjoys exploring new and interesting destinations, expanding his musical talents and staying fit and active!
